How a gas bill is priced
A gas plan in the regulators' feeds has a supply charge in cents per day and usage charges in cents per megajoule, usually in blocks: the first so many megajoules a day or a period at one rate, the next block at another. The estimate above is 365 days of supply plus 20,000 MJ passed through the plan's blocks, GST as published, conditional discounts excluded. Gas zones follow the distribution network, and in Victoria some networks price by sub-zone, which the plan names.
How much gas a household uses
The AER's benchmarks give gas in megajoules per season by state and household size. A two-person household in New South Wales: 16,945 MJ a year; A two-person household in Queensland: 6,262 MJ a year; A two-person household in Victoria: 50,462 MJ a year; A two-person household in South Australia: 14,669 MJ a year. A home with gas hot water and heating sits above a home with a cooktop only; the megajoules on your own bill are the figure to price on.
